If you have trouble falling asleep easily, here are five things that you can do to promote effortless sleep. From temperature to electronics and from eating to relaxation and mattress issues, you may find that one or all of these things are contributing to your sleep issues.
There are many reasons why sleep can avoid us but what is known is that lack of sleep has an immediate and long-term impact on our stress levels and mental wellbeing. In my work with teenagers, we see that lack of restful sleep can cause many problems.

To avoid a restless night we suggest trying the following:
Find a comfortable temperature
It can sometimes be difficult to alter the temperature of your environment, but this can make it much easier to fall asleep. If you share a bed or a bedroom with other people, it can be tricky to get a temperature which is just right for everyone involved. Lowering the temperature and then using a blanket to cover yourself can help you to feel more comfortable and cozy and fall asleep sooner. Simba have a great range of bedding that can help the body regulate its temperature.
Suitable for all seasons, the Simba Hybrid® Duvet adapts to changing temperatures. Its ability to regulate heat makes it a versatile choice, offering comfort whether it’s a chilly winter night or a warm summer evening. This adaptability is a significant plus for those seeking a duvet that can be used year-round.
One standout feature of the Simba Hybrid® Duvet is its ability to regulate temperature. The OUTLAST® technology actively absorbs, stores, and releases heat to maintain an optimal sleep temperature throughout the night. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who struggle with temperature fluctuations during sleep.
We have been using the duvet and have noticed the benefits firsthand.
Check your mattress
A mattress that is too hard or too soft for your body can quickly prevent you from falling asleep. It is recommended that you change your mattress at least every 10 years, but it’s also important that you ensure you’re sleeping on a correct firmness. When shopping for a new mattress, take your time and try out varying firmness levels to find one that is right for you. If you are experiencing any problems with your back, neck or shoulders, speak to your doctor to find out whether there are any specific recommendations.
Put your electronics away
One of the worst things you can do at night if you want to fall asleep more quickly is to take your electronics to bed. Some people have gotten so used to watching something before bed that it’s almost impossible for them to fall asleep without the television or their computer on. However, breaking these habits can help you to enjoy better quality sleep and help you to fall asleep faster.
Blue Light Exposure: Most electronic devices emit blue light, which can interfere with the body’s natural production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Exposure to blue light in the evening can suppress melatonin production, making it harder for individuals to fall asleep and achieve a restful night’s sleep.
Stimulation and Mental Engagement: Engaging with electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers, often involves activities that stimulate the brain, such as checking emails, social media, or playing video games. These activities can increase alertness and make it challenging for the mind to relax and transition into a state conducive to sleep.
Disruption of Relaxation Routine: Establishing a pre-sleep routine is essential for signalling to the body that it’s time to wind down. Engaging with electronic devices may disrupt this routine and prevent the body from entering a relaxed state before bedtime.
Avoid late-night eating
If you have a late dinner or snack and then find that you can’t fall asleep quickly, this could be the main cause. Many people snack late at night as a result of boredom or anxiety about the following day, so you should consider whether any underlying reasons are causing you to do this. If you are going to bed at 11 pm, you should stop eating no later than 8 pm. This will allow your stomach to settle and will allow you to have a more relaxed and peaceful night’s sleep.
Progressive Relaxation
Use this simple mind-body relaxation technique to help your body release stress and tension so that you can relax into sleep. As you concentrate on different areas and muscle groups of the body, you tense and then relax them. Start at your feet and work your way up the muscle group of your body until you reach the top of your head. Tense and relax each group as you go. Try this nightly to power down and release tension. These mindfulness techniques are often taught and practised with a yoga teacher which can help individuals learn how to do this as a daily practice.

Weighted blanket
A weighted blanket is a therapeutic blanket filled with materials like plastic pellets, glass beads, or other evenly distributed weights. The purpose of a weighted blanket is to provide gentle, even pressure on the body, creating a sensation known as deep touch pressure (DTP). This pressure is believed to have a calming and grounding effect on the nervous system, promoting relaxation and potentially improving sleep and mood.
The design of a weighted blanket typically includes small pockets or compartments that evenly distribute the weights across the blanket. This ensures that the pressure is applied uniformly to the body. Weighted blankets come in various sizes and weights, with recommendations generally based on the user’s body weight.
Here are some potential benefits and considerations associated with weighted blankets:
1. Improved Sleep: Many users report that the deep touch pressure provided by a weighted blanket helps improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing feelings of anxiety.
2. Calming Effect: The pressure from a weighted blanket may have a calming effect on the nervous system, potentially reducing stress and anxiety levels.
3. Sensory Processing Disorders: Weighted blankets are sometimes used as part of therapy for individuals with sensory processing disorders, including conditions like autism spectrum disorder.
5. Stress Reduction: The deep touch pressure from a weighted blanket may trigger the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, contributing to a sense of well-being and stress reduction.
Considerations:
1. Weight Selection: It’s essential to choose a weighted blanket that is appropriate for the user’s body weight. Typically, recommendations suggest a blanket that is around 10% of the individual’s body weight.
2. Heat Retention: Some users find that weighted blankets can be warm, which may be a consideration, especially for individuals who are sensitive to heat. Look for blankets with breathable fabrics to help with temperature regulation.
3. Mobility: Weighted blankets can be heavy, and some individuals may find them challenging to move or adjust independently. It’s important to consider whether the user can comfortably manage the weight of the blanket.
We hope that this Spotify app, meditation podcasts and sleep tips provide a good night’s sleep.
