Summer Crafts for Teenagers

Summer craft projects are not just for little children. There are projects challenging and rewarding for adults and teenagers too. People want to create things they actually want, that display their artistic talents and craft skills, and that make a fashion statement.  These summer crafts for teenagers should keep them busy over the summer months.

Teens are unlikely to be particularly interested in making weaving baskets or making shell necklaces but most want new clothes, individual accessories, and ways to customise their own space. Crafts are a way to get all three without spending a small fortune and summer, when there might not be much else to do, is the perfect time to start. Making your own clothes

No, not knitting a scarf or drawing apples on a t-shirt but making the clothes you really want but either cannot afford or cannot find. Some clothes are easier to make than others, and once you have developed the skills you can move onto more ambitious projects. Simplest of all is customising ready made plain clothes. Depending on your style and current trends this could be sewing things onto jeans, patching t-shirts, dying sweaters new colours, or altering skirts.

Making clothes from pieces of fabric is a little more difficult. Skirts, loose tops, loose trousers (pants) and shorts are fairly simple and the best place to start. If you want a long red skirt then you can have one for the cost of material and a little time.

Painting a mural 

Decorating your room in the colours of choice is the start. A real statement can be made by using one wall for a mural. Whether you want hard hitting graffiti art or a pretty landscape with bunnies, there are few better ways to express your personality in your own space.

 A teenager with real artistic ability needs only paints and some time, this is a great summer craft for teenagers . Everybody else should probably first draw their design on the computer or in a notebook and then use a pencil or tape to mark it out on the wall. Simple designs and colours are easiest and usually work best. My teenagers redecorated their rooms and did a great job creating a geometric wall.

Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a super popular hobby, a way to record memories and document experiences. I made a scrapbook after our holiday to Florida. More recently Chloe made one of her hockey achievements and also one to remember her time in Sixth Form.

Many teenagers have digital photos taking up room on their camera roll and are quickly forgotten, which is why scrapbooks are a wonderful way to celebrate travel adventures, childhood firsts, and the love we share with family, and friends.

Bits and pieces 

Small personal accessories are very easy to make for yourself. Making bags, purses, phone holders, and pencil cases in any material or design you fancy is not difficult and while the result will be unique it won’t look like something a ten year old made at camp. It will look like something just that bit better than the ones your friends have. 

You could also make necklaces, bracelets, hair clips, and rings. Decide what you want and, rather than buying something that is almost, but not quite, what you had in mind, make exactly the accessory you pictured. They will also be cheaper.

If you are a teenager then don’t dismiss crafts as being a way for children to make knickknacks, there is a lot more potential there. If you are a parent of teenagers then bear this in mind. Teenagers are generally able to learn any craft skill that an adult can, and want to make things that are genuinely worth making.
