Beautiful beachwear for mum and daughter: The best costumes and cover-ups for summer

It can be tricky finding perfectly flattering swimwear for yourself. And, for little, and bigger, girls, it’s even more difficult trying to find something that is both appropriate for their age and which they’re happy to wear.

But, this season, swimwear has something of a retro feel, taking inspiration from decades gone by, meaning you can cherry pick the best from each era for you and your daughters. Here are just a few of the best costumes and cover-ups for all of you.

mum-and-daughter

1 –  Mademoiselle Bikini €27.30  / 2 – Macy’s £12.95 / 3 – Surfdome £35.99 / 4 – Surfdome £34.99 / 5 – La Redoute £39.00 / 6 – La Redoute £48.30

For little girls

Many parents don’t want their little girls to wear a bikini when they’re little. But, at lots of high street stores, it’s hard to find anything other than itsy-bitsy two-pieces, even for tiny tots. This polka dot one-piece from Troizenfants is delightfully old-fashioned with its pretty gingham ruffles around the waist.

This Little Sweetheart sundress from Macy’s, which picks up the polka dot pattern in one of its stripes, is perfect for throwing over swimwear when you want to head up the beach for lunch or a spot of sight-seeing.

For big girls

If your daughter has reached that age when she wants to look more “grown-up” by wearing a bikini rather than a one-piece, then this style by Sunuva is ideal. The bright flower print gives it a slightly 70s vibe while the ruffles add a girly feel. There’s a matching pair of board shorts to provide a bit more of a cover-up so you could just add a t-shirt and flip-flops if you’re walking back to your holiday accommodation.

For you

The riveria-style never goes out of fashion, and this season is no exception. La Redoute’s black and ecru bikini has a bit of a 60s feel about it, with the button detailing. And, the straps are handily detachable, so you can leave them on for running around and making sandcastles with the kids or remove them if you have a moment of peace to sunbathe with a book.

In the same colour-way, but with a more bohemian air, the store’s embroidered crepe dress is easy to throw on over a bikini. And, it’s a versatile piece to pack into your suitcase – as you can wear as a beach cover up, with sandals and a slouchy bag for sightseeing and shopping, or you can team with strappy black heels and a matching clutch for dinner.

They’re all beautiful pieces. And, if you have your summer holiday planned, it’s the perfect excuse to indulge is a spot of mother-and-daughter retail therapy.
