International Women’s Day matters, it matters because I have two daughters, it matters because approximately 49% of the world’s population is female. International Women’s Day matters because there is yet to be a female president of the US. It matters because a woman hasn’t yet walked on the moon. In short in bloody matters.
This year the theme is #BeBoldForChange. Point out gender discrimination. Point out inequality. Talk about it and be a force for change.
The pay gap is not closing anytime soon.
We can all make a difference, we can all Be Bold For Change we just need to start right now, today.
One thing I have noticed is the rise of even more gender stereotyping. Did you know that we now have BiC For Her Ball Pen. That is right pens for actual women to use! I laughed at how Innocent absolutely owned taking the mic out of that on their facebook page.
Yet I witness this gender stereotyping on Facebook all the time. Last week I spotted two adverts on selling pages
‘Looking for a pushchair for a girl please’
‘Wanted stroller for a boy needs 2 b excellent condition thanks’
I read these and wondered what the difference was. When I needed a pushchair I just looked for one with a basket to stick bags in, four wheels so it moved and and straps so the children couldn’t fall out! I didn’t notice a difference in the gendered design of a pushchair – maybe I was missing something!
Today we must celebrate girls and women, today we need to keep the discussion flowing.
Watch the video above and speak up. Teach our sons that we are equal and teach our daughters that they are more than capable. Let’s inspire, march, protest and demand equality across the globe and lets stand united against those that seek to bring hatred and oppression into our lives.
