The world is becoming an increasingly competitive place, and landing a solid career is no longer as simple as just earning a degree. As a parent, you want to help your kids reach for the stars, but you have to keep their feet firmly on the ground. When it comes time to discuss future prospects with your kids, here are some of the best degrees that lead to promising career prospects.
For number crunchers: Engineering
If your kid shows an aptitude for maths and physics and has a good mind for analysing data and solving problems, Engineering could be an ideal undergraduate degree. Engineers are in demand all over the world, with countries like the UAE even calling for international talent in engineering to join their workforce. It’s also a very lucrative degree, with superb job stability and bright prospects. The advent of technology continues, apace, opening up new opportunities like mechatronics engineering jobs, so there will always be a new challenge.
For budding entrepreneurs: Business Studies
If you think your child has the charisma, intellect and business savvy to become an entrepreneur or run a multinational company, then discuss with them the opportunities that can come with a degree in Business Studies. There are usually no specific subject requirements for undergraduate entry, but they have to demonstrate a level of adaptability, and a good grade in Maths to give them a solid foundation when it comes to business analysis.

A passion for the natural world should be encouraged; and an interest in biological science will stand your child in good stead for a rewarding, interesting career. They’ll need to have performed well in Biology and Chemistry, and be passionate about their specification in order to succeed. When helping your child choose their degree, the key is to reconcile what they love with something that will tick all the boxes for an employer. Just remember that you can gently nudge your child in the right direction, but ultimately, their future is theirs to decide.
