Erin has a love of all things water. I have blogged about her love of swimming before – but in addition to that she loves fish and used to love feeding Grandads Koi Carps in his pond. The pond has since gone and we decided to get a small aquarium that she would enjoy. My dad had quite a simple brief, a small aquarium that was easy to maintain as the aquarium will be at nanny and grandads house. Dad had kept tropical fish when we were younger and tells me it was quite a full on task to keep the aquarium clean and at the right temperature. However now it is a much easier and even more enjoyable task and we thought it would be both Educational and interesting for the children. Therefore I contacted Swell aquatics who I reviewed for last year, our outdoor affinity pond is still going well and is admired by many therefore they were my first thought. I asked their advice about aquariums and they pointed us in the direction of the AquaEl Classic Bow Aquarium Kit which is ideal for those looking for a great value start up set as it only costs £59.99.
Swell offered to send us the aquarium to review and once again we have had outstanding service and really helpful advice. The kit arrived very quickly and I was impressed that the whole kit is really easy to assemble. The instructions are clear and everything you need is included – except the fish and water!

The tank was quickly set up and left again to rest before adding fish. Getting the water just right is very important and this stage should not be rushed. Even when you have an impatient 4 year old and her 3 year old cousin who were eager to go and choose their fish! Therefore they headed of to the local pet shop to get some ideas and have a look at what was available. They wanted to come home with a rabbit – but thankfully grandad stuck to his guns and manage to distract them from that idea!
The following week it was time to head back to the shop and this time to select their favourites. They have started with some little tetra fish which are known for their tiny size and pretty colours.
The tank is a great size for what we were after. The children are mesmerized watching them and take looking after the fish very seriously. I think an aquarium is a great choice for young children as it obviously doesn’t require too much in terms of maintenance and care. It is also really soothing just watching them.

I love what you’re done with the tank. I like how you’ve used wood as one of the accessories too – makes it look a lot more natural.
