Decorating Your Bedroom In Time For The Christmas Holidays

The turn of the season can be a really fun and refreshing time, especially if you’re entering your favourite one. Getting your wardrobe ready for the colder months by bringing your layers out of storage and browsing clothing stores for some autumnal and wintery shades can be very enjoyable for many. As well as changing our look when we’re out and about, one thing that a lot of people don’t consider is what they can do to change up their homes too. While we may switch back to our duvets rather than a thin sheet after the summer heatwaves, there are still plenty of other things we can do without switching our rooms from a cool and airy summer room into a warm and cosy winter one. Here are some tips that you can use when looking to decorate your bedroom in time for the Christmas period.

Seasonal Fabrics
During the wintertime, it’s worthwhile thinking about changing the fabrics in your bedroom to make things feel much cosier. Aesthetically speaking, you’ll want to consider some Christmas colour schemes such as punchy reds, golds and greens to represent the holiday season. Patterns can also play a huge role in this, with plaids and checkerboard designs adding a welcoming and pleasant feeling to the room. Alongside these visual themes, you’ll also want to consider how well these fabrics keep your room warm and comfortable. A fluffy and thick duvet and soft blankets will help keep you warm during the colder nights, and thick wool curtains will also lend themselves to keeping the colder air out of your room.

Pleasant Lighting
As well as the fabrics and colour scheme of your bedroom, you’ll also want to put a large focus on the lighting, too. As this time of year is naturally darker in the northern hemisphere, you’ll want some great quality lighting to keep the place bright and comforting when needed. Smart lighting is a great choice for this as you’ll be able to change the warmth of the colours, making the room appear much cosier in the evenings and brighter and vibrant on gloomy days. You can also consider getting yourself a lamp that mimics a sunrise for those mornings when it’s difficult to get out of bed due to it being so dark outside.

Holiday Décor
During Christmas, many of us spend time decorating our homes to get ourselves in the holiday spirit. Christmas trees decorated with tinsel, baubles and fairy lights are commonplace over the winter, but there are plenty of other ways in which you can add a Christmas feel to your home. Your bedroom is a great place to add holiday décor. You could add things like a garland over your headboard or along your shelves, candles to make the place more comforting, and also things like stockings to be hung at the end of the bed. You could even hang them over the mantlepiece if your bedroom has one, as many old Victorian homes often do.

A New Rug Or Carpet
Another way to add some Christmas comfort to your bedroom would be to add a lovely warm rug to the space. This will not only make the place feel more comforting but will also help to insulate the room somewhat. You could also go all out and completely change your floor if you’ve been looking at redecorating. A nice eye-catching design for your bedroom carpet, such as those available from Designer Carpet, could be a great addition to the room during this time. Don’t forget that the feel of the carpet is just as important as the appearance, so make sure you choose something that will be pleasant to walk on barefoot.

Candles And Scents
Sight and touch are all very important aspects of the design of your bedroom, but something else to keep in mind is the smell. Using candles with pleasant scents can be a great way to change the entire mood of a room, and around this time of year, you’ll want to consider choosing some musky scents such as woods and spices. For example, Christmas spice candles with cinnamon and cloves are a perfect way to make a room smell more festive. Also, candles are aesthetically pleasing too, making a gloomy room appear more relaxing to be in. As well as candles, you could also choose oil burners for your scents, or an essential oil vaporiser, too.

Make Use Of Greenery
Winter can be a dark and gloomy time, and this can often lead to many of us feeling low and unhappy. Some people suffer from what is known as seasonal affective disorders or SADs, which will occur at the same time each year, usually around winter. This will lead to feelings of depression, fatigue, and hopelessness, often caused by the lack of sunlight and the gloominess of the world around them, in this case. One way in which people try to counter this, often fairly successfully, is to add more greenery to the home. Plants have been proven to be a great remedy for those suffering from mental health problems and have many other benefits to our physical and mental health in general. Consider adding some seasonal house plants to your bedroom, such as the classic and vibrant poinsettia or a small pine sapling. You could also decorate the room with greenery gathered from outside, creating beautiful garlands out of fir tree trimmings or even your own wreath to hand on the door or above your bed.

Warm Curtains
The cold is understandably a big issue at this time of year, and keeping our homes warm is essential. Not only is it important to be able to heat them up when needed, but preventing that heat from escaping is also crucial. One way of improving your home’s insulation is to make use of thick, heavy curtains made from insulating materials like wool or even specially designed thermal curtains. These will help to prevent heat from escaping through your windows and also prevent the cold from getting in too easily, as well. You could have a pair of curtains for the colder months, opting for something to match your Christmas colour scheme, and then switch them out for a lighter, brighter pair of linen sheer curtains during the warm summertime.
