Don’t take the parents.

A leaving school prom is a very different affair to when I left complusory schooling twenty years ago. We had the few streamers in the least run down classroom, tables pushed against the peeling walls, some cheesy music and a few bowls of wotsits.

This week saw my gorgeous little brother (who just turned sweet sixteen) getting dressed up in a expensive suit (not the kind the boys in my year wore with their shiny nylon suits) and headed off to his school prom.

A sophisicated affair – until the parents get involved!

My brother had a date for the night – a girl who is a friend but not a girlfriend. So Sam, along with our parents were summoned invitied for pre prom drinks.  Mum had tried to make Sam take his friend, thats a girl, but not a girlfriend flowers.  He didn’t, he felt to gah about that.  They drove up to the girl who is a friend but not a girlfriend house and there was a mini welcome party, including the parents, the grandparents, family friends and a sheep shearer from New Zealand.

Now I think this is quite a big deal for any sweet sixteener and a bit awkward all round.  The girl who is a friend but not a girlfriend had gone to lots of effort as the girls do, hair done, make up done and the beautiful full length prom dress.

Our mum on meeting everyone for the first time, turned and looked and gushingly said:

‘Charlotte you look very pretty’

Only for my poor mortified brother to say (in front of the welcome party)

‘mum this is Catherine’

My poor poor brother – why oh why.  Next time Sam leave the parents at home!!!
