Shopping for your own wardrobe can be frustrating and overwhelming. A lot of these frustrations stem from not knowing your own personal style. There are a lot of things that we like and think look great on other people, but that feel wrong when we try to wear them. From pieces of clothing to jewelry, it can all be confusing. Understanding what your personal style is will help you to make fashion choices that will help you feel comfortable and confident. If you are stuck, here are some things you can do to start on your fashion journey.
Find Inspiration
It is unlikely that you are going to find one style icon or celebrity that always matches your personal style. Most people are a mix of a few different people. You can start a collection of images of fashion choices that seem to match your own personal style or what you like best. Once you start to collect these images you should see a pattern start to emerge. When you notice what you are drawn to, you can start to narrow down your style choices.
Label It
Once you have narrowed down your images to what you truly love, then you should find a few words that describe them. Use words like classic, modern, bohemian, trendy, or eclectic. Once you have a few words that match your style, you will be able to find more pieces that fit in with your aesthetic. This will help you define your look even further and really find pieces that resonate with you.
Signature Look
We all have those outfits that make us feel like we are on top of the world and super confident. When you find an outfit like that take a picture of it to use as a reference with you when you go shopping. These outfits will likely encapsulate the essence of your personal style and seeing them together will help you to duplicate other outfits that give you the same feeling.
You should also look for common themes in pieces for a signature look. All fashionable women known for their sense of style had something that was uniquely theirs. Your signature piece can be a piece of jewelry, a style of shoe, or a constant accessory. If you wear prescription lenses, then it might be a certain style of frame or the lenses for your eyeglasses.
Let Go
We all have certain items that we want to love, but that just doesn’t work for us. Take a look at your closet and see if there is anything that doesn’t seem to fit. You should also take notice of things that you seem attached to, but that you don’t wear. Usually this means it is a style you like and admire, but that isn’t your style. Learn to let go of that idea. Embrace and love who you are without trying to be something you are not. It is great to love a variety of styles, but that doesn’t mean they all have to be something you wear.
Sharing is caring!
