The feeling of anxiety doesn’t disappear, no matter how many times, you place your child in the hands of an anaesthetist and yesterday was no different. This time I had to stay stronger and actually take Erin into theatre as daddy didn’t come to hospital with us, instead I had my lovely mother in law so it was down to me to take in her.
The wait wasn’t so bad this time but I was worried how she would be in recovery. I didn’t want to see her as distressed as last time. To see her headbutting, frightened and panicking was hideous. As I was taken to her I could hear her crying but it wasn’t the high pitched waling we were greeted with last time. As soon as Erin was in my arms, the crying subsided to a muffled sob and within seconds she was asleep in my arms. I took in our surroundings which I didn’t last time and one of the recovery nurse came to speak to me and said how much calmer Erin was and that she looked after her last time too. Taking stock I realised that this nurse was infact an ex student of both Lee’s and mine. She said that she knew who we all were last time but it obviously wasn’t the time for hello’s as Erin was so distressed.
It’s a funny old place really and just shows how education works – this girl who I taught English and Lee science too was now taking care of our precious girl. Handling the most precious (along with Chloe and Dylan) thing of mine, caring for her with the skills and qualities that I hope we instilled into her throughtout her school life.
Once I was back in our room with Erin I took a look at the cast and was rather shocked at just how wide she has been set this time. Erin is now in a splits position which is bringing a whole host of new challenges as the seating and table at home all needs adapting. She only just fits in the car now and her legs are very wide in the buggy. I really need a double emmaljunga pram that has no middle bit, so I will be looking for a second hand one on ebay especially as it gets colder. Clothing Erin is pretty much out of the question now, today she is wearing a jumper but has nothing on her legs.
Once in our room Erin slept for a good hour then woke up full of beans asking for milk, toast and to play!
Just after this picture we went down to the plaster room to be finished off and Erin choose purple legs this time. Therefore she is now sporting a purple pair until mid January. The new cast is taking some getting used to, nappy changing is not easy as the cast is much tighter and higher up her torso this time. The first cast was to belly button height, this is a good two inches above the belly button.
I am sure we will learn and Erin continues to be an inspiration to me, smiling in the face of all her treatment.
