Some people couldn’t imagine traveling abroad with their children and for others, it is a dream. For those that would love the idea of sharing their travel experiences with their kids, this article is for you.
Of course, a lot goes into planning and preparing for a trip abroad with kids.
Documentation
First things first – passports. Passports need to be up to date and double-checked for their expiration so they are sure not to expire. It is advised to make sure they extend to at least three months after the return from your trip. Keeping all the passports together in a laptop case or backpack pocket is the best way to make checkpoints simpler.
A note of consent from any other guardians that won’t be traveling with the child, or the child’s consent if they are above 18, is a good idea to have on-hand. Calling the embassy to which you’re traveling and understanding their guidelines on this can make your trip much less stressful.
Ask your doctor ahead of time what shots you and your child may need to travel to your desired region(s) and make sure to print out documentation of said immunizations.
Jet Lag
Planning for jet lag can be tricky and there may not be too much you can do, but there are a few tips to keep the kids from losing their minds with the time zone difference. Non-stop flights and short or no layovers are best to speed up the adaptation process once you reach your destination. It is recommended to stay up until at least 7 or 8 p.m. local time on the day of your arrival.
However, you decide to manage the time difference, be sure to bring lots of different activities for the kids’ short attention span on the flight. Bringing lots of snacks is a great idea as well. Books, tablets, stickers, crayons – all of which are new to them, is important in keeping your kids occupied.
Make sure they get plenty of rest the first day or two. Plan your schedule around their nap and bedtimes.
What To Bring
This one’s easy – bring only what you need. Don’t focus on being cute, focus on being comfortable. Managing kids on a trip abroad is a lot of work and the last thing you want is for them to be crying about their outfit. Depending on how long you’re there, you’ll only need a few different outfits.
Be sure to bring a favorite blanket, stuffed animal or something of comfort for each child. Being on the other side of the world will be overwhelming for them and they will need a safety net.
A good stroller is essential. Period.

Expectations
Realize you can’t do it all. Give your kids time to relax and find spots to sleep close to town so there’s less travel time.
Traveling abroad with kids will be overwhelming at times but rewarding at others. Remember to breathe. When the pandemic is over here are some great places to travel too.
Sharing is caring!
