How to get a good work-life balance when you own a small business

Being your own boss can be one of the most rewarding and positive ways to make a living. It’s also great to start a business when you know how. However, if not managed correctly, it can be stressful and hard to strike a good work-life balance. To be successful and to help your business grow, you need to assess how you manage your workload. If you work too hard over a long time, you can end up burning out and eventually damaging the business. Here are some tips you can follow which will help you to achieve a better work-life balance.

Embrace technology

Opening your mind to new technological advances could revolutionise how your time is spent at work, helping you to operate more efficiently. For example, you could investigate investing in invoice software for your business, which could help produce a smooth and reliable automated payment system. Technology can increase workflow by reducing the time it takes to complete a task. This should give you more time to focus on other aspects of the business.

Understand when to say no

As a new business, it’s important to grow your customer reach by taking on new work, however, taking on too much work can be detrimental to your business. Learning when to say no is one of the hardest but most important things you can do. If you aren’t able to delay or turn down work, then you’ll end up exhausting yourself and producing mediocre results in the process. All the work you produce needs to be to the highest standard, so it’s important to manage your workload to make sure you don’t overburden yourself.

Change your working environment as and when you can

Depending on your industry and if it’s possible, you could try working from different locations, such as home, an office, a social workspace, or even on the move. Working in a repetitive and restrictive environment can reduce motivation and creativity. Encourage other team members to work remotely, you could use video calls to save time commuting, or online messaging where possible to prevent too much email traffic.

Take a break

It’s incredibly important to allow yourself time to take breaks during a working day. Too much time in front of a screen can cause mental exhaustion as well as physical issues. Taking a break will give your body the chance to recover and recharge. Make sure your employees also take their breaks and feel comfortable doing so.

Support flexible working hours

If you have employees, consider introducing flexible working hours. Everyone works differently – some people are more productive in the morning, others prefer to work later into the evening. Introducing flexibility shows your employees that you have an interest in their wellbeing. This may also help families work around childcare needs and feel supported by your business, making them happier and therefore more productive at work.

Give yourself time to relax

To be successful, you need to learn how and when to unwind, whether that’s through exercise, socialising, or learning a new skill. Allowing your mind to switch off or focus on something completely different will make you more efficient when you’re at work. If your work is heavily computer-based, try cutting back on tech when you’re in your downtime, reducing the distraction of emails and social media will help you to focus on relaxing.
