How You Can Encourage Your Teen to Live Healthier

As the parent of a teen, you’ll know how difficult it can be sometimes to get them to listen to you. They’re developing as young adults and growing in independence. Nevertheless, you’re still their parent and you have a lot to offer. It’s particularly important to make sure that they’re living healthily and looking after themselves. Here’s how you can encourage them to do that if they’re not doing it already.

Be There for Them to Talk To

Simply being there to talk to them and being open with them about emotions and feelings is something that’s definitely very important. When they have someone to talk to, they’ll feel much more emotionally supported. And the teen years can be tough mentally, so sharing your experiences and wisdom with them might help them a lot. Simply being there and being emotionally available is one of the best things you can do for them.

Discuss Body Image Issues with Them

Discussing body image issues and other things related to that topic is something that you should definitely try to do as a parent. It’s something that a lot of teens struggle with, and you certainly don’t want to pressure them to be or look a certain way. Helping them to be confident and happy in their own skin is the healthiest approach you can take.

Try to Cook Healthy Meals

As a parent of a teen, if they’re still living at home, you can try and do your bit to support their diet by cooking for them. You might feel that this is no longer your responsibility now that they’re getting older. But if you can find the time to cook, it’ll at least ensure that they’re getting some healthy meals into their diet, and that might not otherwise happen.

Give Them the Gear They Need to be Active

Giving your teenager the gear they need in order to be active is important. If they have that stuff, they’ll be more likely to find the time to do some activity or even work out. You could buy them some t-shirts that are ideal for the gym or even some things that allow them to work out at home without having to even go to the gym.

Talk to Them About the Importance of Sleep and Routines

It’s important that your teen understands the importance of getting enough sleep each night and that it’ll help them with their studies, school performance and general wellbeing. If they don’t understand why it’s important, your explanations might help. You can also try to reinforce the reasons why good routines can help, especially when it comes to staying on track with work or school.

As you can see, there are lots of things you can do to encourage your teen to live as healthily as they can. So if you’ve been worried about your teen’s lifestyle and you feel that they haven’t really been doing enough to look after themselves before now, be sure to make the most of the ideas above.
