Making Creative Expression a Part of Your Everyday Life

Do you engage in any form of creative expression on a regular basis? Ideally daily?

From taking up painting to working on pottery, or drafting up a new novel, there are many different forms of creative expression out there — some of which can leave you with your own artworks to furnish your home with, and some of which may even end up launching you on a new career trajectory.

When all is said and done, though, the main benefit of creative expression is the fact that it gives you an opportunity to get in touch with the deepest parts of yourself, bring them to the surface, and achieve a greater sense of balance and wholeness as a result.

Here are just a few suggestions for ways of successfully making creative expression a part of your everyday life.

Sign up for group classes

Signing up for group classes, whether a One Day Film School, or a life drawing class, is one of the best ways of awakening and developing a genuine passion for creative expression in your life — and making it “stick” as a part of your everyday routine.

Having a community of people around you who are all engaged in the same activity and are motivated to be consistent, can be a very uplifting thing — and it can give you a sense of direction as opposed to leaving you to figure things out all by yourself, or to be entirely responsible for your own routine.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to make new friends either.

Nurture the habit of spending time on creative hobbies instead of common time-sinks

For many of us, one of the chief obstacles to actually engaging in creative hobbies is the simple fact that it’s so easy to end up “sinking time” into largely passive activities, such as surfing the web or watching TV shows on a streaming service.

While there’s nothing wrong with these activities in and of themselves, they can easily end up absorbing all of your free time if you let them.

Working on nurturing the habit of spending time on creative hobbies instead of on common time-sinks can help you to find, and develop a love for, more creative and uplifting leisure activities.

Note down flashes of creative inspiration when they occur to you — and then use them to create goals

Virtually everyone has flashes of creative inspiration from time to time — whether in the form of a feeling that it would be great to paint a landscape that you’ve just seen or in the form of a melody that pops into your head out of the blue.

Noting down these flashes of inspiration when they occur — may be in a special notebook — and then using them as the basis for goal setting, can be a very fun and motivating thing.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t set yourself a goal such as “I will paint this beautiful landscape,” even if you’re a total amateur artist. The goal itself will give you the motivation to continue engaging in your creative pastime.
