If you’re making some style changes in 2020 then the first thing you want to do is take stock of what you currently have to work with to decide what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to keep and what you want to donate. This includes trying on everything in your wardrobe, sorting through any drawers of makeup you have and really digging out those items that have been sat at the back of the closet or up in the loft waiting to be worn again. By trying on all your current clothes you may find some pieces you’d completely forgotten about and can simply bring them out of storage and back into rotation. For some inspiration as to how to organise your wardrobe and other areas of your home, check out the infamous Maire Kondo who will teach you how to decide what you need to keep and what you should donate.

Make small changes

You don’t need to max out your credit card, get a tattoo and lose 20lbs to reinvent yourself, a few small changes can soon add up to create a big impact. Here are 6 little changes that make a big difference.

Accessories

Accessories such as handbags, jewellery and shoes are a great way to upgrade your style and change your look without breaking the bank in an attempt to replace your whole wardrobe. Take a look at some fashion magazines or head online to some designer stores to find the seasons hottest trends and then buy affordable alternatives from your favourite.

High street stores

Where possible stick to more classic pieces such as black patent shoes or a faux crocodile leather handbag as these are more universal and can be worn with almost anything.

Part your hair the other way

Bored of your hair? Before you go to the hairdressers for a radical change try simply swapping your parting to to the other side of your head. Parting your hair the opposite way can completely change the look of your face and will add extra volume to your roots. At first your parting may not want to stay, so a good trick is to part it before you go to bed and then set in place with some setting cream and wear a wide fitted elasticated headband to keep it all in place, when you wake up it should know where to lay. If you’re feeling bold and adventurous, you can also try getting clip-in extensions and wigs. The variety of styling options will keep you thoroughly entertained for a long time.

Find yourself a lipstick of confidence

A bold lipstick is the only new makeup you need to glamorise and upgrade any look with impact and femininity and it can help to make your teeth look whiter too. Red is the most common bold lipstick colour of choice, but try out a few other shades such as darker purples, pretty peaches and bold browns to see which suits your face shape and skin colour best.

Get a new piercing

Ear piercings are a simple, relatively pain free and one of the less drastic ways to play with body modification. A couple of well placed ear piercings will allow you to experiment more with jewellery and can really help to frame your face. Remember to always have ear piercings carried out by a professional and there’s always the option to use clip on alternatives if piercings aren’t your thing.

Paint your nails

Your manicure may seem like a minor detail but a set of well maintained and painted nails can really change your look and also spark confidence. If your nails are short keep them filed neatly, if they are long then pay attention to their shape and uniformity, next paint them or have them painted professionally to add a pop of colour and style.

Stick to a skincare routine

Achieving glorious glowing skin is a great way to embrace a natural style in 2020 and the best way to achieve it is by finding a skincare routine that is right for your skin type and then sticking to it day and night. Exfoliating dull and dry skin away with an exfoliating cleanser or a mild acidic treatment, replenish the cells moisture with a rehydrating serum that penetrates deep into the layers of your skin and finally remember to always wear SPF, even in the winter, to protect against sun damage.

Consult a style expert

Getting stuck in a style rut, or not having a clue where to start with fashion, can put a bit of a spanner in the works if you’re looking for a style transformation – which is where consulting a style expert comes in. Many department stores offer free personal stylist sessions with one of their trained style experts and these are a great opportunity to learn something new about the seasons trends or to try out new things that you wouldn’t normally pick out for yourself.

To get the most out of your personal stylist session here are a few things to remember:

Go in with an open mind

Remember to go in with an open mind, after all you’re looking to try something new and sticking to what you know isn’t going to help you.

Don’t be nervous

A personal stylist isn’t there to criticise your current style they are there to help you develop it. If you’re feeling a bit nervous about the whole experience then invite a friend along for some company and try on new outfits together.

Ask questions

A personal stylist session is a great opportunity to learn more about the kind of clothes that suit your body shape and the trends of the season so don’t be afraid to ask your stylist plenty of questions so that you can come away well equipped to make your own future style decisions.

Don’t feel compelled to buy

Although it’s obvious that most stores offer personal stylist sessions in order to help you discover and buy more of their products, remember that there’s no obligation to buy if you don’t want to.

Change your mindset and the rest will follow

Finally, remember that sometimes a change in your style doesn’t necessarily need to start in your wardrobe, but it needs to start in your mind.

Take a step back from purchasing new clothes and put some time and effort into learning and discovering who you are as a person and discovering your authentic self, often your own personal style will then follow naturally. A simple switch in mindset can also help to build your confidence and enable you to discover true happiness and when you wear clothes with confidence and happiness they instantly look better – no new wardrobe needed.
