The cold weather has definitely set in, with gale force winds and sheets of rain landing at our feet. It’s no wonder our skin takes a bit of a beating during the winter and, if we’re not careful, we’ll be laid up with colds and coughs no matter how good our immunity system is.
Protecting yourself against the elements is essential if you want to stay as healthy as possible during the winter and beyond. It’s not just about the clothes you wear, either. It’s about simple things around the home as well. Here are some things you should consider to ensure you and your family are as warm and snug as possible until the springtime arrives.
Wrap up warm
George at ASDA’s range of cardigans and jumpers will ensure that you can stay cosy when it’s cold. Make sure that you have plenty to choose from, whether it’s open front cardigans, chunky knits or a simple, and casual hoody. That way, no matter what outfit you opt for, at least you will have something nice and warm to keep the elements at bay.
When you do go outside, make sure you don your winter coat. The temperatures outside are not for light jackets! If you do go out when it’s raining heavily, pop an anorak over the top of something chunky and warm so that you still have the layers.
Take the opportunity to accessorise to the max! ‘Tis the season for hats, scarves, earmuffs and gloves, so make the most of them!
Protect your skin
It’s well known that the winter brings with it cold temperatures that can dry out your skin, bringing out rough patches and chapped lips in less than no time. Pop a lip salve into your bag so that you can re-hydrate your lips whenever you need to. Moisturise regularly, too, especially areas that are exposed to the elements regularly, such as your hands and face.
Stay warm at home
You may be trying to save a few pennies by lowering the thermostat by a degree or two, but don’t feel bad about cranking it up over the really cold days. It’s better to spend a little more, and stay warm, than to freeze at home.
If you have an electric blanket, turn it on just before you go to bed to warm up your bed before you climb in it, but remember to switch it off before you go to sleep. Alternatively, the trusty hot water bottle is a perfect thing to pull out of the cupboard and is much kinder to the electricity!
Make sure that any draughts are blocked, using excluders and such, and grab a blanket to keep downstairs so that you can snuggle up on the sofa of an evening if it’s particularly glum outside.
Eat Well
The winter is a great time for hearty, warming foods, such as stews and thick soups. Make use of the slow cooker and keep warm from the inside. Hot drinks such as cocoa, tea, coffee and Horlicks would also help to warm the cockles!
There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the cold weather in winter just like you enjoy the summer months. Wrap up warm and face the elements face on!
