Half term is done and I see many whooping after what mums consider a hard week. Those I see on social media with hashtags hoping the holidays are over. Too many wishing the day away and talking of trying to juggle it all. Those whining that the children have been too demanding, that the fridge is empty. My truth is somewhat different, I love my children being home. I relish the holidays and the break in routine. Slow paced life suits me and mine.
School holidays are one of the biggest benefits of being self employed. I get the struggles from working mums I really do. Yet honestly these days go so fast. I look at my children and I wonder where 17 years have gone. Treasure them. I know I only have my eldest teen for a short while. The UCAS application is already being discussed. When the school holidays roll around I am celebrating that I get to parent my children. I enjoy my children and I’m not going to apologise for that. There seems to be little middle ground on social media. You need to either be an earth mother or one begrudging the school holidays. Well I sit firmly in the middle and I’m not ashamed to say it.
Why We Welcome the School Holidays
- No clocks. There is no alarm and I am not a morning a person! Our 7 year old doesn’t wake early and when she does wake she entertains herself in her room until she hears us move at about 9! This is so much better than that rude awakening from my fitbit att 7.15.
- I taught my children to entertain themselves. We do not need to spend money everyday or even go out. I don’t worry that they will get bored, we relax, we chill. I don’t feel they constant need for activities and days out so we don’t have unrealistic expectations during the holidays.
- No school shirts to iron. That’s a winner right there!
- School runs are forgotten for a week. No looking at the sky at 2.30pm to see if it will be a dry or wet walk home!
- Homework is not an issue, instead we can read for pleasure and not for comprehension.
Therefore I welcome the school holidays. I let the children stay in bed, they might not get up until mid morning. It is fine. We have been out, we have danced, we have made nachos and cakes. We watched TV as a family and we are rested. Bring on the summer holidays!
