There have been many challenges with having a two-year-old in a hip spica, not least allowing Erin to keep her independence. It would have been very easy to do everything for her, to take over feeding her for fear of her getting the cast messy. However, that is not what we wanted and therefore we searched out products that would allow her to retain the independence she has. The Stokke high chair is one of those hero products and is the perfect high chair for a baby in a spica cast!
Hip Spica cast friendly Stokke high chair!
It was when I was looking at photos of another toddler in
Steps, the charity that supports families with children with hip dysplasia also has the trip trap chair on its list of recommended products. When I tweeted this, Sian from Stokke offered me a trip trap chair for Erin. I was very excited when it arrived and putting it together was so simple. All that was required was an alan key that it came with. I didn’t use it with Erin in spica because she was just coming out of it at that stage. However, she will be back in spica in May and I will see how she gets on with it then.
Although Erin is now out of spica I am very mindful of healthy positioning for her, especially as she isn’t fixed yet and is waiting for her next operation.
The biggest advantage of the tripp trapp over other chairs is the premise that they grow with your child and not the other way round. The footrest and the seat height are all fully adjustable. The seat puts children in an ergonomically correct position which is so important with Erin’s hip problems. To know that she is sitting supported and not putting additional pressure on her joints is vital.
The stokke high chair allows Erin to sit at the correct height at our dining room table which means that she can eat and play easily, joining in with the rest of the family.
The Tripp Trapp can be accustomised to suit your style as it comes in different colours and also has some great accessories from cushions and the newborn set. I bought the baby set now that Erin is out of spica, as it means that I don’t have to use the harness. Although if you are a parent of a spica toddler you will find that at first, they are too stiff to get into the baby set. It took Erin a couple of weeks to loosen up and bend her stiff legs. However now she loves sitting in the baby set and enjoys time at the table eating and doing a craft. I look forward to using this stokke high chair for years to come.
