Teaching your kids at home is something that you’re likely going to have to do at some point. This could be because they are little and with you all the time, meaning that you are the one to teach them. Or, later down the line it could be that they need help with homework or have missed some school due to illness. You might be absolutely dreading this, and you’re not alone so don’t panic. But, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare like you are expecting. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you can do to ensure this doesn’t happen, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.
Look It Up Online
We highly recommend that if you don’t know the answers, you look it up online. The internet is a fountain of knowledge, and nobody expects you to know everything. It’s simply unreasonable to assume that you should know everything, so don’t feel bad about looking up answers as long as you stay away from Wikipedia. Remember when we were in school and we were always told that wiki wasn’t exactly accurate because the information could be changed easily? It’s true and we wouldn’t want you to accidentally give your kids the wrong answer.
It’s also the case that you might find some fantastic resources online that you can use to help your kids. Take some time to look through the things that are available online, and this will give you some things to work with. It can be easier when you have prompts or aids to keep you on the right track when you’re trying to teach them.
Encourage Them To Enjoy
Another thing that you should be doing is encouraging them to enjoy the learning process. If they enjoy it, then they’re going to want to sit and listen, rather than run around, causing chaos for no reason. We know that you might think it’s impossible to get them to want to learn, but it’s not. You just need to find a way to get through to them. Sometimes, showing them how to relate these things to real life can be helpful if your kids are old enough to understand this.
When it comes to younger children who aren’t learning school things just yet, using lots of colours is going to be helpful to you. As they get older, the colours are still going to help, but you will also need to move onto other methods as well. For example, when they are learning the alphabet and words, you might need to look up tips to sound out words as it can be very tough. When you’re trying to come up with things to encourage them to enjoy it, just remember how old they are and ensure that it’s working for their age group.
Take Them Out To Learn
Have you given much thought to taking them out to learn? For some kids, taking them to the park, letting them run around and then bringing them in to do some work will help. You can also use the park to demonstrate some basic things. For example, you can use the swings as a great example for counting, you just need to get creative with it.
Or, you can even take them places where they teach them awesome things. For example, museums can be a lot of fun as there is so much to see and do. If your kids hear the word museum and they are old enough to understand, then they are likely not going to look forward to it from the things that they have heard. However, we’re sure that they’re going to have an amazing time while they are there, and it beats sitting in the same spot all day.
Use Your Knowledge
Your knowledge is going to come in handy as well. Instead of looking everything up online, there are going to be things that you can do without it. Of course, we’re not just talking about the basics such as teaching them the alphabet and to count, but there will be areas that you have a lot of knowledge in. It’s just a case of waiting patiently until it comes in handy.
You may even be able to find a way to work it into other things. For example, you might find a way to relate the things that you love into the things that you are teaching your children. It’s not always going to be possible, but when it can be done, we encourage you to do it.
Stick To The Basics
If you’re not confident in your ability to teach, then we highly recommend that you stick to the basics. We understand the hesitation when it comes to this if your children are older and that’s absolutely fine, so stick to the absolute basics that you do know. Again, the internet is your friend for anything that you don’t know, and if your kids start talking about something that has got you feeling completely clueless, then be honest with them. Tell them that you don’t know but you will look it up, or you will look it up later. Be honest that there are things that you don’t know but are willing to find out. This fosters a good work ethic for later down the line.
Reading Is Great
Reading is one of the best things that you can do for your children. Not only does it help to develop their verbal skills, but it also works well for aiding their imagination. Of course, this is true if they are reading fiction books, where non-fiction books give them facts and aid their verbal skills. You can read to them, and get them to read to you so that all the bases are being covered. If you set an amount of time to read with the kids per day, this is something that will be extremely beneficial to them and you. You get to spend this time bonding with your kids, and they get to develop their skills.
Educational Videos Are Great
The final thing that we want to say is that we know a lot of parents shy away from screen time, but this doesn’t mean that you should. There are a lot of educational videos out there, and they can teach your kids so much. Of course, we’re not recommending that you just let them do this as the sole way to teach them but it can be a helpful teaching aid. Even teachers in schools use videos to enhance their lessons and to explain some of the other things.
You can look these up online, and see what there is. There are sites out there that will give you lists of educational videos to use, but you can also simply type the keywords into YouTube for example and have a bunch of results waiting for you.
