Today was one of those days made for going for a walk. The sun was shining and although there is a cold chill in the air it is good enough to sit and enjoy the early part of Spring. Bourton is one of the UK’s most picturesque villages and here we share 5 things to do in Bourton on the Water.
You will find Bourton on the Water not far from Stow-on-the-Wold. Head South on the A429 signposted Cirencester after 4 miles turn left at the traffic lights into Station Road and follow the signs to the car parks. From the South where the Cirencester A429 & Cheltenham A436 join, (ignore Satnav) and travel North up the hill on the A429 to the traffic lights and turn right into Station Road.
Bourton is a jewel in the Cotswolds and we are lucky that it is so close to us. It is always busy with visitors from all over the world, who come to see the tiny little town with such beautiful houses and the picturesque stream that runs through the village.
Today we sat and stopped, drank coffee, fed ducks. It was lovely and although it is always busy it has a relaxed charm to the place.
5 Things to do in Bourton on the Water
- Visiting the model village. Erin loves to wonder as a giant between the miniature houses. The Model Village is the only grade II listed model village in the country. This wonderful model of the actual village built of Cotswold stone to one-ninth scale opened in 1937.
- Take a picnic and sit on the grass and feed the ducks. No trip to Bourton is complete with a paddle in the stream. You can sit by the river bank with a coffee from one of the many tea shops.
Here Erin enjoyed getting really close to the ducks and running over the little bridges to the other side of the stream. Lots of children were in the stream and had Erin been wearing her waterproof trousers she could have.
3. Visit Birdland which is home to over 500 birds. Birdland is set in nine acres of gardens and woodland, creating a picturesque canopy for the winding River Windrush. You will be able to spot flamingoes, parrots and pelicans.
4. Enter the dragonfly maze which is one of our favourite things to do. Erin loved playing in there.
5. It is also a great place to take the bikes as there are plenty of places to visit or just to get out in the Cotswolds.
