Road trips. Who doesn’t love them? The open road, the fresh air, the feeling of freedom. It’s pretty hard to beat. Of course, road trips can be a logistical nightmare sometimes and occasionally fraught with distractions or roadside issues. Fortunately, some preparation and diligence can make your road trip something much more memorable. With a little preparation, a truck road trip can be both fun and economical. Here’s a short guide to help you make the most out of taking your next road trip in your favorite truck.
Camp in Your Truck
If you want to save money on lodging during your trip, you can camp right in your truck. It’s easiest if you already own a camper shell, but you can set up camp with equipment you probably already have. You can store your camping equipment in the back of the truck if you want to camp outside of the vehicle and you can bring folding chairs /tables to enjoy your time around the campfire. It’s also a good idea to bring flashlights, cookery, and anything else you normally take on a camping trip. Being prepared is a great way to keep yourself safe and enjoy your camping trip.
Plan Ahead
As wise sayings go, “always plan ahead” is a pretty good one. Planning is so integral to helping any trip run smoothly, the AARP has an entire checklist for planning. Some of it is common sense: plan as early as possible, use planning tools, etc. But you should also make sure you plan stops, account for costs, and make sure you have enough clothes and food to get through your trip. Make sure that you have plenty of snacks, drinks, and other things to eat on your trip – it’s best not to rely on fast food restaurants for sustenance. Also, be sure to pack some entertainment in case the drive gets boring. The last thing anyone wants is to be trapped on a road trip without anything to do for fun!
Bring A Friend Or Your Family
Traveling alone can offer plenty of time for thoughtful introspection, but there are times when taking a traveling companion along is a good idea. Bring a friend or two along on your next road trip. Having your family and friends along is a great way to enjoy the trip much more and get the best out of what the open road has to offer. Better yet, you can hang out in the truck bed, have a drink, eat something, or simply just relax. Keep Fuel Costs in Check
If you’ve been keeping up with gas price fluctuations lately, you’re probably worried about the practicality of taking a trip in light of high prices. You can get around that concern by watching your fuel conception. Large vehicles can definitely use a bit more fuel. So, keep track of how much gas you have in your tank and make sure you’re checking the gauge frequently. Fill up when you need to and look for the gas station with the lowest price. Consider joining a gas rewards program to take advantage of discounts. You can also save fuel by not using air conditioning and keeping windows rolled up most of the way to reduce drag. You’d be surprised how cool you can keep things by cracking your window slightly. Do your best to reduce fuel costs but also enjoy your trip in relative comfort.
Enjoy the Journey
Driving to your destination is only half the fun of taking a trip with your family. The journey is just as important. You should enjoy it. If there are roadside attractions that you want to see, stop and see them. You see something interesting, take a photo or do a video. Get out of the car and walk around a bit. Make frequent pit stops. Enjoy your time with your family because with busy work schedules and the way the world tends to work, most of us don’t get as much time with them as we would prefer. Ultimately, you want to have fun and make sure everybody enjoys their time on your next family road trip
