York
Few of the country’s cities are quite as rich in history and culture as York. But the city also boasts a range of modern amenities, making it perfect for modern workers in a service economy. You might make your home in one of the city’s many period properties, or seek out a cutting-edge, modern apartment building. The amazing views of the famous York Minster Cathedral alone are sure to make life in the city incredibly fulfilling!
Cumbria
Cumbria is perhaps best known as the home of the world-famous Lake District National Park. It’s a perfect antidote to city life, and a perfect place of escape. Live here, and you can go hiking every weekend, and never be far away from an inspiring natural view. The county has undergone major developments, recently, however: there are plenty of new build homes in Cumbria for those fleeing the city to settle into.
Cambridge
This university city is best known for elite-level education, and for a growing reputation as a hub of technology. It’s recently been announced as a target for infrastructure development by the chancellor. But even if you’re not moving here in pursuit of a tech job, you’ll still find plenty to enjoy. The culture is vibrant, the schools are outstanding, and the city itself is beautiful.
Aberdeen
Aberdeen is attractive largely because, relative to the rest of the UK, the cost of living here is extremely low. It enjoys fantastic public transport links with the rest of the country, and there are abundant green spaces and beaches to enjoy, especially in summer. The only downside is that, for much of the year, the weather is quite gloomy. If you can accept that, then this is a city with a range of benefits to consider.
Cardiff
Finally, it’s worth considering the Welsh capital, Cardiff. Like Aberdeen, this place is made attractive in part by the lower cost of living. But the city also boasts a thriving arts community, plenty of inspiring historical attractions, and natural beauty in the form of the city’s enormous bay. You’ll also have easy access to the famous Brecon Beacons National Park, which can be found around an hour north of the middle of town. Within the city itself, there are more than three hundred separate parks and gardens, which provide residents with more per-capita green space than any other city.
