Travelling provides many opportunities for learning whether you travel home or abroad. The rise of staycations is likely to continue in the coming couple of years with the rising cost of living and because in the UK we seem to have fallen in love with our own destinations once again.
Due to the pandemic, overseas travel became increasingly challenging and as we stayed home we visited more of the UK than we had previously. This reignited our love of the countryside and our coastline.
There is much to visit in the UK, after all, we have a history and pageantry that many other countries don’t. I think that for children there is so much to see and do in the UK that can bring their learning to life. Children learn about royalty, castles, the Great Fire of London and the plague in schools. Therefore a trip to London brings all of that to life for them and we all know that witnessing places helps with understanding.
Start Rite conducted some research to see whether staycations are more affordable than abroad and the results are fascinating. They highlighted some of the great spots that are available for families in the UK. We often overlook our own cities and instead fly to Tuscany Barcelona or Paris, yet York or Brighton are also great spots for weekend getaways.
One advantage is the reduced travelling time. A weekend getaway often means a very early flight and hours spent in airports. Choose a UK city and the sightseeing starts much sooner. This also means that you are not as tired from the travelling which ensures that you can most the most of your weekend hours.
For those that travel in order to feel the soft sand between their toes look at the south coast or the gorgeous coastline in Wales. Many love the Gower for family trips that provide plenty of space for walking and exploring plus long golden beaches and waves for the kids to jump. Although the temps might not reach the dizzy heights of the 90’s that is no bad thing with young children’s skin! When it is really hot the kids can often be fractious and grumpy and not want to play. Drop the heat a little and sandcastle building becomes a reality. Just grab some wetsuits or suitable clothing for the sea and the kids will be more than happy.
