Travelling with tots

I thought I would try to put my experiences of travelling with little ones down on paper, especially as it is the start of the holiday season.

First and foremost be prepared. For me this includes thinking about what time of the day or night is best to travel. For us with early risers the best has always been up, breakfast, hit the road. I don’t like travelling late afternoon when I worry that if the lil ones sleep that it will interfere with bedtime sleeps.

Secondly make sure the children are safe, obviously this involves making sure children are in correct car seats. Remember that for younger children weight is what is important. The law states that children up to the age of 12 must use the correct child restraint. Also it is the driver’s responsibility to make sure the child is correctly restrained. I have recently started using Graco’s nautilus 1 2 3 as it is a multistage car seat that will last from 9 months to 12 yrs.

Thirdly do not fill the back of the car with lots of stuff, this could be a hazard if an emergency stop is required. Also if you have a son like mine that gets travel sick you do not want vomit over all your bags in the back!
Have snacks, drinks, soft toys and music available to keep young children occupied. Plan rest breaks if the journey is long as a bored lil one can easily distract the driver who needs to concentrate.

Finally have available the first items you may need in an easily accessible place for once you arrive at your destination. This maybe a blanket to lie baby on or a chair while you unload the car. Personally I find a bumbo seat amazing for travelling as it is a great chair and can be used for feeding and playtime. It wipes clean too and doesn’t take up much space. I am so glad I have been able to borrow one.

I have lots of reviews coming out to make travelling that bit easier – keep checking back!
