The New Year and Spring are often times that we look about our home and decide to redecorate and declutter. I am no different as I have decided to redo the living room. The furniture is beautiful as it was only bought last year but our sofa’s are the grand age of fourteen. They have seen some sights over the past 14 years, all of my babies have been nursed on them, cried on them slept on them. I have already ordered my new grey sofa’s and I cannot wait for them to arrive. What started out as just getting new sofa’s has now changed to wallpapering the main wall and freshening up the other walls. New curtains, wall decorations and key pieces. In my minds eye I picture the tranquil room that is an oasis of calm, a room where people exclaim its beauty.
Yet the reality is I’m a little scared about the room, about the co-ordinating of curtains and cushions. I’m not good at it you see, much like putting together an outfit I’m often worried I’ll get it wrong. Outfits don’t matter so much as you change it the next day or sooner if people starting looking at you a little odd. However a room makeover is different. It seems I’m not alone. I asked a couple of fellow bloggers and Emma really made me giggle with her tale of the time they were young and cashed strapped so painted their bedroom orange as the paint was in the sale! She also confesses to buying leather sofa’s that made her living room look like a dentists waiting room. Carolin thought that getting a professional in would make life easier yet the reality was different when her brother in law turned up when he liked and made more than a mess of the job including ruining her flooring.
Bettaliving have put together a piece about room design and mistakes to avoid it includes the advice not to overdo trends. One example is doing the country living look and going too far with floral curtains, curtains and so on. Another common mistake is the buying the wrong paint. Now this is something I worry about and then I end up buying lots of tester pots. My walls become littered with several splashes of very similar colours. Therefore I am taking my time with making the decisions I have got several wallpaper samples and they are currently adorning my walls. I keep looking at them and imagining the room.
To make sure we get it right and make the best decision we are waiting for the sofa’s to arrive and then I will find the curtains and accessories that complement them. I wish I had the budget of a celebrity lifestyle whereby I could just chat to someone about what I want the living room to look like. Then this amazing person would go and do the sourcing and buying for me. Even better if would then actually do the decorating!

Funnily enough I’ve just posted about decorating our living room & playroom! It’s exciting but daunting isn’t it. I don’t want to get it wrong and be stuck looking at a mess!
Having lived in rented houses all of my adult life, I’ve actually never been able to decorate anywhere before, but I’d absolutely love to be able to put my touch on our home. I’ll definitely come back to this post if I do, to make sure I don’t make too many silly mistakes!
I am HOPELESS at it. I can never seem to choose the right colour paint. In our last house the two rooms I was responsible for ended up hospital green and nuclear yellow. I think I do my tester areas too small. I am leaving all decisions in our new house to Mr B, he has a much better eye. Good luck with your choices and look forward to some photos when it’s done!

Oooh we’ve had some decorating disasters in the past – I’m a lot more cautious with colours these days 😉
