Parenting Is Teamwork

The days where parenting was left to the responsibility of the mother only are long gone. Nowadays, parenting is a mission that both parents share equally – except in monoparental families. Whether a child has a mom and a dad, two dads, or two moms, in a two-parent family, you need to devise the best collaborative approach for your kids. Indeed, parenting needs to be teamwork to help your children in their personal growth. While it’s not to say that single-parent families put children’s emotional development at risk – far from it! –, families that fail to share roles between all the parents are likely to build a distorted image of society for their children. Additionally, it’s fair to say that caring for your kids is hard work. Sharing challenges and difficulties between parents can keep things smooth and frictionless. Ultimately, the idea is simple: parents are stronger and better when they work together. Here are some thoughts to bear in mind when you’re planning to start a family.

Don’t deprive your child of one parent

The first and most important rule to remember is that, whenever possible, each child should have both their parents in their life. For separated families, therefore, it’s essential to discuss shared custody with family law solicitors – unless there are real safety reasons to disrupt the bond with one parent. Children who grow up deprived of one parent are more likely to develop emotional issues and find it difficult to build lasting relationships with their peers. Similarly, you shouldn’t let career or social life come between you and your child. Even parents who work long hours need to make time in their busy schedule for their family.

Preparing the house for the family

Your home acts as a nest for your family. As such, parents need to work together to build a baby-friendly environment. Indeed, childproofing your interior is hard work – and you might be surprised to discover that the most mundane items can be a risk for a baby. Two heads are better than one during this time, especially when you’re going to struggle with sleep deprivation and exhaustion. Additionally, with two parents, you can share costs and everyday routines, from the purchase of baby supplies to changing nappies. Working together can help avoid mistakes – as a result of extreme tiredness – and enjoy the learning journey as a new parent!

Agree on rules to follow

As your child grows older, your parenting style needs to include additional rules and disciplinary guidance. Indeed, maintaining a tidy and harmonious home is hard work. But creating family rules that every family member has to follow can make things a lot easier to manage. It’s up to parents to agree on shared rules. You don’t want a child to turn parents against each other because “mom promised that” or “dad said I could”. Sticking to clear rules are the same for adults and children can also establish a sense of fairness.

Being a parent is not always easy. However, choosing to share tasks from the beginning – regardless of how the relationship with your partner evolves in the long term – can be a life-changing experience. Parents have to stay united in their roles to help their children grow.
