Rainbow Craft Ideas: Easy Rainbow Wreath For Kids

Are you looking for rainbow craft ideas? We have the answer with our super easy rainbow wreath that we had great fun doing together today. I have put together a step by step tutorial of how we made this stunning low cost rainbow decoration that can be a free-standing or hanging decoration.

Rainbow pictures are adorning houses and windows up and down the UK. They have been seen as a symbol of hope and used to show our appreciation for those looking after us during self-isolation. We are super proud of how it has turned out and already Erin has had orders to make more! I turned this into days learning activity and incorporated Maths, Business Studies and Design & Technology into our home learning fun.

What you need to make a rainbow wreath

  1. Polysterene wreath we ordered a pack of 4 from Amazon.
  2. Pom Pom balls multi coloured, we ordered a bag from Amazon and this made two wreaths with some leftover.
  3. A Glue Gun – again we use this one.
  4. Pencil
  5. Ruler

Instructions for making the rainbow wreath

Prepare The Wreath

Firstly I cut the wreath in half, with a sharp knife, to make two arches rather than using round wreaths, this gives the rainbow shape.

Measure Each Section

Then Erin measured out equal sections of the arch with a ruler and pencil. She divided the rainbow into eight sections based on how many colours of pom poms she wanted to use. Nice link to maths and fractions here. Drawing the sections also gives a guideline when you are sticking the pom poms on.

Start Gluing

Next using the glue gun Erin worked quickly to add the red pom poms to the first section. We used about nine or ten pom poms per section. Ours are 1-inch pom poms. However, we only did the front half of the wreath. Next time we will do both sides which would obviously double the pom poms used.

Build Up The Colours

The colours of the rainbow were used to build up our rainbow wreath.

Complete The Arch

Erin kept going until the whole arch was complete. She had great fun doing this and it was super easy. It looks fabulous in our window. You could leave it free standing as we have done. Or you could tie a ribbon and hang it from your front door or anywhere else.

After Erin had finished it she showed her nan who requested one. Erin then sat down and worked out how much it cost us in craft supplies and then added her fee on top before texting her nan with a quote! This was a great practical lesson in Math and Business studies too! It seems I have a right little entrepreneur on my hands who values her time quite highly! She is pretty convinced that she could now sell these on Etsy or somewhere!

Joking aside though this rainbow craft activity was great and they look fab. If you are searching for more craft activities take a look at Boredom Busters for Kids or 20 DIY craft ideas.
