Having a dad as a Science teacher and mum as an English teacher has both positives and negatives for our kids! It means that we are quite good at sorting out the homework between us, I check all the arts and humanities stuff whilst dad checks the maths and science! It normally means that Chloe’s friends double check their homework with us too. However it also means that we are forever questioning and challenging the children. Most parents do I know – but it is so ingrained to us that sometimes we need to remember to stop. Therefore I was really pleased to be sent the wild science lip balm laboratory set.
The set is aimed at primarily at girls aged 8+. Chloe is just 12 and really enjoyed doing this. I like that it contains everything needed for the children to have a go themselves. The instructions were clear and Chloe needed no help. To be fair her first lip balm ended up as a gloopy mess, but I think this is an important part of the process for her age. She needs to know that measurements need to be exact and she needs to follow the instructions absolutely. Children always learn best when discovering things for themselves. I am a real supporter of kinesthetic learning. Long gone are the days of chalk and talk thankfully. The next couple of balms were spot on.
Science still often has a male dominance in schools, with more boys opting for A Level science than girls (with the exception of human biology) and therefore it is great to find some early chemistry sets that are making more effort to teach girls about science.
There are lots of other titles in the wild science range including making bath bombs and also kits aimed at the boys like weird slime. There are also plenty of gender neutral sets too if that is your preference.
These kits are a great way to spend an afternoon learning about science in your own home. They bring the fun into science and hopefully teach the girls something along on the way.
