How to Stop Overthinking Everything

Everyone overthinks sometimes. But some people do it more frequently than others and it disrupts their daily activities. Overthinking can be very negative and trap you in a spiral therefore you need to learn how to stop overthinking everything if you want to be successful. I am a huge believer in whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life.

“I just keep on thinking and thinking, and thinking all day long and wonder if I can ever end this on my own. It feels devastated in the end.”

“Overthinking is parasitic. It’s viral. It’s deadly, even. Letting yourself fall victim to overthinking doesn’t just kill your happiness; it destroys who you are. The mind is a beautiful and complex thing, and the only person who can hurt it is yourself.”

— Genereux Philip

So, you just read the above, and you might have resonated with the heaviness of these words. Before you can learn how to stop overthinking, you must first address the question, “Why do I overthink?” Often overthinking is a by product of anxiety or depression. You may find that overthinking only materialises your need to make a tough life decision or are dealing with your insecurities.

However, there are some tried and tested methods that you can implement which will enable you to solve the issue of how to stop overthinking and how to save yourself. Here, I’m sharing some of the tips that have helped me, and I believe, can help most people.

Let’s discover these possibilities in a better way!

Know where you stand

You might have heard of a saying that goes like – “Awareness of a situation leads to its betterment”. But how and why is it relevant here?

Well, here lies a very simple logic. You cannot get a solution or fight against a situation you don’t even understand. You first need to be aware of where you stand.

Overanalyzing a given situation and still reaching nowhere is a clear sign of overthinking something. Know that you’ve been overthinking continually and there’s just no point in that, once you’ve figured that out, you can definitely have more clarity.

While this may sound strange, but in stressful situations, most people reach alarming medical levels of disorders like chronic overthinking that cannot be treated with usual ways that work for people. It is recommended to see a therapist or psychologist who can assist you with the right approach.

Remember, if things go completely out of your hands, reach out to someone who can help you out. Do not leave it to yourself anymore!

Talk to someone

No doubt, talking to the right person can work as a therapy. For sure, you can try out other ways of clearing your mind, but a close-talk with someone you resonate well is pure bliss.

Be it a conflict with a loved one, a failure, discontentment, confusion, or anything that is profoundly bothering you that can push you into the loops of overthinking should be brought to a solution.

The” talking” therapy has its deep-seated roots in the psychology of overthinking, which relates to the way it can help a person to open up and discuss their concerns. So, next time when you feel terrible, do not hesitate to reach out to someone who listens to you.

And most importantly, don’t feel ashamed of what you think. Let it come, accept that it’s alright, and yes, you can get over it! I have found that six sessions coaching can help reframe a situation and allow you to find the answers that you already have inside yourself.

Pick up the right distractions.

Considering what generally goes, you might have a perception that says – “Distraction leads to destruction”.

Contrastingly, here we are going to question its prominence. How fair is it to say that distractions always cause harm in some way or the other? For sure they may divert your focus, and that’s not desirable at all, but what if I say, it all depends upon how Right your distraction is?

Just think to yourself, for a mind that’s already replenished with disturbing thoughts compelling it to think over and over, is there even a direction that mind can lose?

Honestly, it all depends on how you use your mind and what you feed to it. It magnifies the same and settles it in your subconscious.

Thinking about something, again and again, affects your mental stamina and drains your energy to a greater extent. In such a situation, it’s essential to divert your mind and engage in activities that make you feel recharged. Worthy of mentioning, it entirely depends upon you what can get you a direction that won’t feel too heavy to carry.

Usually, we overthink matters when we aren’t occupied with something, or let us say when we are idle. If that is the case with you, you can make yourself busy or engaged in creative activities that come easy for you and doesn’t involve much effort. Doing so will incline your thought process into a single direction and help you to stop overthinking by preventing unnecessary thoughts that divert your entire thought process in the wrong direction.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is what gives you a deep sense of contentment and peace. Take a moment, and ask yourself. How often do you pay attention to things you’ve been blessed with? Do you really value that or keep complaining about everything that’s already not in your control in the first place?

For instance, take a look at these beautifully apt lines –

“Thinking too much just brings it back to me, me, me—but thanking takes my eyes off myself and my mistakes and puts them on others, on things bigger than myself. I can’t stand here very long without being humbled at how small I am and amazed at how big and beautiful our world is.”

– Elizabeth Musser

So, what did you conclude?

Yes, it may sound of a little significance initially, but gratitude can be a prominent answer every time you wonder about how to stop overthinking and save yourself from the harm. All you need to do is take a deep breath, acknowledge the beauty around you, and pass a smile!

Know that, divinity holds the supreme magic, and you’re never alone!

Conclusion

Concluding everything, in a nutshell, overthinking isn’t a causal issue that should be taken for granted. If you ignore it, you are likely to make it a habit which is not a healthy thing. Of course, it is not easy to drag yourself out of that dark place but, where there is will there’s always a way!

Be it a usual massive experience or something as intense as obsessive overthinking. It is essential to address it because ignorance will only make it worse!

Of course, there is no magic spell every time you wonder if there’s an end to this or how to stop overthinking things and creating problems that don’t even exist. It requires your own tiny effort to put a stop to this trouble!
